Biography

Jimmy was born on Christmas Day of 1946, in Pascagoula, Mississippi. As a child, he lived in Mobile and Fairhope, Alabama. His music story began playing the trombone with a St. Ignatius School band. He sailed a lot with his father. Sailing exerted influence on Jimmy’s style, which sports romantic coastal and solitary themes. He studied at McGill Institute for Boys, Pearl River Community College, and Auburn University, where he gained experience in playing the guitar. In 1969, Buffet finished the University of Southern Mississippi with a history degree. In 1970, he released his first album – “Down to Earth.” At the time, he worked in Nashville as an editor for Billboard magazine.

Going on with Music

By the time of the release of the first album, Jimmy Buffet had been playing in street in New Orleans for Tourists. It was then he met Jerry Jeff Walker, who invited him to busk with him. In 1971, Buffet went to Key West to continue to play in streets, and there he started to become the man he is today. At this point, his was playing in the so called “gulf and western” style, a combination of folk, coastal themes and country music. Over the 1970s, he produced several albums. In 1977, he wrote the song “Margaritaville”, which became a hit and gave name to his restaurants and a recording company, which he started. This and other hits boosted his popularity. Jimmy Buffet grouped his biggest hits into the “Big 8” and would play these at every Buffet party. The hits brought him thousands of followers overnight. In 1997 he wrote the music and the lyrics for a musical based on “Don’t Stop the Carnival” novel by Herman Wouk, but it would not see the light of day because of criticism and Jimmy’s conflict with producers. Now that Jimmy Beach has recorded 27 albums, he remains that easy-going beach guy, and this music is filled with old romantic themes.
